Eric Staal Thread

Man, that bad contract sticks out like a sore thumb on that list.

May have to eat some of that to get anything really good in return, like pick AND decent prospect.

And I would do that thing.

I don't think it's as much a wait and see attitude as much as it is letting that deadline get closer to try and maximize return.

And with a monster contract the size of Eric's, another month shaved off that contract makes it a little more digestible to the team acquiring him. IMHO, he's going to be moved by the 29th, I just don't think the return is going to be as good as most of us hope. There have been no signs whatsoever from Francis or the Canes camp that they are leaning to the side of a new contract extension for Eric.

That is my sinking feeling but really? There is no way to predict what will happen, really. A need could come up. I always use this as reference... but we did manage to get a 1st rounder and decent prospect for Andre Sekera. Let's just hope some contenders' #1 center or one of their key centers/forwards goes down.

It will cost a team nearly a million-and-a-half just to rent him ($9.5M in salary).

Will be interesting to see if PK is willing to eat some of that remaining salary this season in order to sweeten the return.

It would be extremely foolish to me for the Canes to not maximize their return by offering to eat the full 50% of Eric's remaining salary/cap hit, unless the team trading for him is dumping multiple bad UFA contracts back. I fully expect the Canes to be willing to eat the max they can to broaden the pool of teams willing to make a deal and maximize the return.

Yeah to me that should be a given on the table on the outset. And a reminder of the Sekera trade made to any GMS calling RF about #12 :)

Chump change really, for any team bound for the playoffs. On a team deep at center, EStaal will still provide a match up dilemma for the opposition, based on his size and reach alone.

Great points BB! I am still at a loss for the best team fit for E. Staal from the playoff contenders out there though.

I look at a deep team like the Caps and think that would be the kind of move that would send the message of the rich getting richer with an all-in mentality to win the Cup. The Caps could use Eric at center or the wing and really tip the scales in their favor in the East.

In the West, a team like Anaheim is seeking a top 6 forward but they are looking to move a defenseman like Hampus Lindholm or Cam Fowler and I'm not sure Ronnie wants defense back...so that might be a three team trade scenario or you turn around and move that defenseman for a forward.

Anaheim
Nashville
Rangers

The trade rumors keep insisting that the Wild want a scoring center. Granted, Eric hasn't been a scoring machine, but with a change of scenery... would they be on his "no" list if they're playoff bound?

I would think he would be open to it. I dunno. Bunch of guys from his draft year playing on that team. Plus, doesn't he have some ties in them parts, through family or something?
