GDT 7: Leafs @ Canes, 7 pm, SN - Fuck you Jobu...

Honestly, I’m thinking maybe the way for these guys to win is to have no coach at all. They just want to do whatever the fuck they want to do and nothing else.

If I were Keefe, I’d tell them I’m taking my hands off the wheel. Play how you want to play for a couple of games and let’s just see what comes out of that. Systems don’t work with these guys. Freestyling might.

he picked up on this in preseason and so far it has played out the same. All of muzzin, holl, Brodie and Dermott ahouldnt be done

Yeah, there is a bit of weird parallel here to Babcock's attempt to get them to play the way he wanted shortly before he was booted.

There has definitely been tactical changes made to focus on scoring "playoff" goals in the regular season. More rebound and deflection goals. Which i kind of get, but think that this team is poorly constructed for. We have literally zero defenders with big point shots and most of our forward group are fast transition type guys.

Yup. They stressed this kinda thing a lot in the Amazon program during the regular season where they mostly shit on teams. And then they had another playoff failure. I do think this was the year they finally said fuck it and went full Babcock. Unfortunately adding Nick Ritchie does not suddenly make this a "playoff style" team. Best bet has always been to try to win playing to the teams strengths. I'm skeptical, even doubtful, that it happens but it's their only hope.

Do they go back to playing pond hockey and squeeze out wins in 6-5 games. At least it was fun to watch

I mean, if that's the way forward I'm a bit amazed by letting Hyman walk, keeping Kerfoot, etc. The answer to this particular problem isn't in forcing perimeter players to go to the net more often, it's to replace tertiary players with guys who go to the net. Bunting, Ritchie, Kase are a good start in that direction. But we kept guys who never see the front of the net...Kerfoot & Engvall specifically while at the same time have a bunch of defenders who do a pretty poor job of getting "pucks on net".

Don't half ass a style change.

They don't need to. The style they played last year was fantastic. Best defensive team I've seen as a Leaf fan in my life, probably by a lot. If the problem is that we don't score enough dirty goals, there were more than enough roster slots to fill for us to find guys who do that. You can play that possession style and still crash the net.

I'm starting to sense a trend here of a front office that over reacts to the previous year's failure. They blamed 19/20 on the depth kids not getting it done, lack of leadership/long pants so we went from being fast and aggressive to older and slower. Now they're blaming not scoring "playoff" goals and their answer is to torpedo a dominant style of play? There was nothing wrong with the system and everything wrong with the willingness of 3/4 of the forward group to go where they needed to go for dirty goals to have a higher likelihood. The system they used last year generates a ton of opportunities for point shots with net presence if that's what you want more of.

Getting flashbacks to waiving Grabovski, trading for Bernier and signing Clarkson. The true Blue and White Disease.

Bring in external solutions to your immature/shirkish young players and, whadyay know, they don't mature/toughen.
