no, just questioning whether they've been making a strong push to trade Liles just quite yet.

Actually in that same interview Poulin was talking about how hard it is to clear cap space late in the offseason/preseason. They were talking about how teams can go 10% over in the offseason and his response was something along the lines of "yeah, but you can't magically clear cap space when you have to get back under. Teams at that point of the season all think they are going to win the cup."

The Leafs won't ice a 20 man roster, so no sense in looking at that.
Everybody seems to be stuck on one or two players to be moved, which I understand, seeing how Carlyle didn't use Liles last year...but Nonis is making the deals, not Randy, and we should be prepared for something we may not like. There is a possibility that the only way the Leafs make things work involves trading away something another GM actually wants as opposed to our garbage.(not that I think Liles is garbage)

There's lots of time still, and I might even wait until the very last second, in case some Dmen get hurt during pre-season. But it may not matter if we move a forward or two.

Dave Poulin on the fan last week:

"Everyone has what they believe is the information, and its not quite the information. You have to look at roster size to start with. Everyone is claiming you have to have 23 players on your active NHL roster. You do not have to have 23 players on your active NHL roster. You have to have 18 skaters and 2 goalies. So you have more flexibility than you think you have."

How do the cap calculation rules work anyway?

So for instance, capgeek has Holzer as counting towards the cap. But it seems you guys are excluding him. How does it work - if we send him down do we not have to count him anyway?

Of course. Calgary was playing with less a few years ago because of the cap.

What reason is there not to? Why does it seem so preposterous to not have a player wearing a suit at games?

Their farm team literally practices in the same building if they need a guy on short notice.

Clearly the Leafs brass is contemplating it if they need the space, so it is not unrealistic.

I'm sure they view it as a last report (lets say someone gave an offer sheet to Kadri/Franson), but not as a solution to the problem.

There will be a trade of some kind. I'd be shocked if they rolled with a 20 man roster for any length of time.

The point is there are definitely other possibilities and this situation clearly isn't "Liles can be traded or they can't sign Kadri/Franson."

And again. the cap dropped $7 million. This isn't a typical cap management season. Lots of teams are feeling the same pressure and will have to do things they wouldn't normally do.

The Leafs have the 10th most cap space available and 5th most money to spend per free agent remaining.

That's actually not good. We need other teams to have more cap space so we can unload Liles.

It always annoyed me that the Leafs locked themselves into 23 man rosters all the time thanks to guaranteed contracts.

Most teams use a 21-22 man roster most of the time, not a 23 man. Leafs were one of the few teams that always had one.

At the same time, a 20-man roster with next to no cap breathing space to maneouvre is very unlikely, too.

The problem with a 20 man roster, even with the farm team in Toronto, is the short term injury. (I'm not positive on rules, but) I don't think you get cap relief to replace a salary until they've missed a handful of games. So if you have nobody on the roster in case of injury, then you have to wait until you get that LTIR relief before calling someone up.

Going with a 22-man squad you can do, having one spare up front and one on the blueline. You can do a 20-man for a little bit here and there to save some space, but budgeting for that is quite foolish.

ya, I'd say 22 is ideal, as you can keep a spare dman and a spare forward.

21 is workable as well -- keeping just a spare dman. You could always just dress 11 forwards if one gets hurt. Most teams play their 4th line or #12 forward very little anyways.

Using a 20 man roster though, with almost no buffer, is very risky.

You can make an argument that teams should dress 11 forwards / 7 dmen in games as opposed to the std. 12/6.

If you lose a dman early, whether due to injury or penalties, you're put in a big hole, having to go with 5 dmen for a prolonged stretch. Much bigger hole than if you lost a forward. Most teams go with 3 lines most of the game anyways.

Bottom pair dmen play anywhere from 12-18 mins, where as a lot 4th lines barely see 10 minutes. Having that extra dman on the bench to me, seems a lot more valuable than a 8 minute, 4th liner.
