Leaf Rumours

One article that is speculation at most... is that Toronto trades Liles and Colborne to Calgary for Kris Russell. A nobody 7th dman or something.

Again pure speculation but Calgary could help us out... but I doubt that Liles has Calgary on his list of teams he'd be willing to go to.

You know, for all the complaining people have been doing about Nonis messing up on the compliance buy outs, it seems that he did buy out the correct two of the three candidates, if the goal is to free up the most cap space possible for this year.

Wow, an NHL GM knew more about the cap than an armchair gm.

Liles was so good before his concussion, maybe a team would bet on him re-discovering his touch. Burke singled him out for being possibly the most fit and dedicated Leaf. Good guy to have on a team. Just with the cap, he becomes an albatross now.

I'm sure someone would give him a chance. But nobody is going to come close to paying him 4M for 3 years. The most I could see him getting would be something like 1/1.5 or maybe 2/2.5.

So if the Leafs retain say $1.3m of his salary, then he's signed for $2.5m for 3yrs to any team thinking of trading for him.

Why would anyone want a small defencemen who is north of 30, has a history of concussions, an ugly contract and simply can't play defence on their team? Not knocking Liles as a person he seems like a decent guy but his best hockey days are long behind him.

The fact he wasn't bought out gives me hope that he can be traded. Probably have to attach a prospect or pick with him, but as long as they can clear most of the salary, it will be mission accomplished.

IMO the term is the problem, not the money. He was pretty much unplayable last year.

I think the only way you can move him is after a good start.

I think all this about him suddenly playing so poorly is crap.

He was in the doghouse for whatever reason, and it wasn't because he was worse than Holzer, Fraser, O'Byrne and whatever other garbage we trotted out on the third pair last year.

Liles (32): 32 gms, 2 gls, 11 pts, 18:46 (82 gms, 5 gls, 28 pts)

His metrics were decent. Didn't face tough comp, but posted a positive corsi and shots against were relatively low with him on the ice.

Gotta be a team that needs a puck moving dmen in the 2.5M range (if the Leafs absorb some of the deal). His still NHL calibre.

It's the years people will want no part of.

And I can't see any team in the East taking him to do the Leafs a favor either.

Think of it like this. The Preds had to give up Cody Franson to get someone to take 2 years of Lombardi when you could still bury contracts in the minors.

If Liles had been a regular last year you could probably find a place for him. But as a guy in the doghouse for 3 more years? IMO he needs to show he can still be a top 4 dman in the league again before you can get someone to take that. Or you need another year or two to go by.

Also, we haven't really seen bad contracts being eaten in trade under the new CBA yet now that teams can't bury guys anymore.

Nobody would come close to signing him for 3 years/2.5M per year. You'd likely have to add in a fairly decent prospect to even have someone else consider taking him on, even at that price.
