Leaf Rumours

Think of it like this. The Preds had to give up Cody Franson to get someone to take 2 years of Lombardi when you could still bury contracts in the minors.

If Liles had been a regular last year you could probably find a place for him. But as a guy in the doghouse for 3 more years? IMO he needs to show he can still be a top 4 dman in the league again before you can get someone to take that. Or you need another year or two to go by.

Also, we haven't really seen bad contracts being eaten in trade under the new CBA yet now that teams can't bury guys anymore.

There are enough porous bluelines in the NHL that moving Liles shouldn't be that hard if we agreed to take back $1M of his salary and accepted almost nothing in return.

Pride might get in the way of this trade. But cap space is the most valuable commodity we can hope to get.

Again its not the money, its the term. Would some team take a chance on Liles for $2.6 mill? Yeah, probably. But why do it for 3 more years after he had a year where he earned himself a place in the press box on what was widely considered a shallow defense.

No one is that desperate. Especially now that you are stuck with that contract in the new CBA. Can't just send it down.

I think you give far to much credit to Carlyle, that other teams would just take his word for how good Liles is.

Smart teams are always on the lookout for players who are being underrated or underutilized by their teams, in hopes of getting them for cheap.

There isn't a team in hockey that would place more value on Kostka or Holzer than on Liles, simply because Carlyle did.

Yeah for sure. Not hoping to get them signed for 3 more years.

They only have ~5.3M in cap space -- and that doesn't count another depth forward which needs to be added to the roster.

Even if you assume Brennan or Fraser is sent to the minors for some cap savings, there's no way they can sign both for about 5M, even to short term deals.

Poulin said on the radio they probably wouldn't keep a 23 man roster. And it certainly is enough to sign them to Subban deals.

I mean that is obviously what they are looking at here considering how much cap space they chose to leave themselves and which two players still remain unsigned. You can't pretend like that isn't one of the more realistic scenario's in Dave Nonis's mind.

That's a big assumption. We only just signed Ranger, and haven't signed Franson yet. Even with both of them signed, that's still only 7 dmen on one-way deals.

I'm not taking into account a 23 man roster. I'm using a 22 man roster (13 forwards, 7 dmen, 2 goalies).

You're not getting Franson and Kadri for 2.5 each.

So suddenly youre arguing that they need Liles more than the cap space?

They don't have to keep a 22 man roster either.

And why not? Subban just signed for exactly that. Trying to get them on similar deals to Subban is hardly unrealistic. I don't see how you can pretend like it is.

The only way they are getting bigger money is on longer deals.

Technically (and unrealistically), they could squeeze a 20-man roster under the cap, with Kadri and Franson signed for $7m, and Fraser sent to the marlies.

With a 20 man roster (including a signed Kadri and Franson) the Leafs have $7.1 million to sign them both. Plenty of money to get them both on short term deals. And certainly plenty of cap space to increase the possibilities beyond "they think they can trade liles or they want to trade Kadri or Franson".
