Leaf Rumours

I'm sure if they can trade him they won't buy him out.

That said this year and next year are by far the most difficult cap years for the Leafs with all the free agents. They need as much space as they can get in those years.

Regardless the circumstances, the prudent GM treats cap space like gold.

It's far more worthwhile to get creative with Liles than to buy him out like a buffoon.

Trade him and a 2nd or 3rd to someone for a low end prospect. Or for some bottom pair dman making half the money. And then ship Fraser off to someone who needs cheap brainless muscle on D.

The fly in your ointment is that both scenarios require a dance partner. I don't doubt that Nonis enquired and found nothing on the Liles front. The Fraser bit though, he shouldn't even have been qualified...**** that guy.

That's exactly what he would be doing by buying out Liles, prioritizing the most important, scarce cap space there is. This year's.

The problem with that is if we buy him out then 2.35 (or something like that) counts against the cap next year when we have to sign key guys such as Kessel and Phaneuf. This would have been so much easier had Burke not inked the midgit to that horrible contract, anyways I think Nonis should try and flip Liles off on a sucker and hope we have a taker... I would try that option long before using the buyout one.

Cap, most likely, goes up next season, $2.35M will replace the $2M for Tucker/Armstrong. Nonis has tried to pawn off Liles, but no one wants the stuff on the discount rack.

2 things

1) Nope, you're talking about year 3 of the buyout, next year is .875 again, 300K cheaper than Komi's buyout would be next year
2) The NHL has been pretty tight lipped with revenue numbers from last year, but by all accounts they were up huge. A ton of outdoor games this year will drive that number through the roof as well, and the NHL had already artificially suppressed the cap for this season (when just on it's previous trajectory it would have been 73-74 million this season had there been no lockout). Even factoring in the new revenue split, the cap figure for next season should be somewhere around 70 million (and **** me that's being conservative with the math). Kessel & Phaneuf will cost at most an additional 3 million dollars total per season over what they cost now. Tons of room to bring them back.

Again though, if there is a Liles taker (that wouldn't require us taking money back), he won't get bought out. If he does get bought it, it's proof positive that there were no other reasonable options.

If salary caps start hitting the 80+ million I'm going to be pretty upset that we lost a season and a half of hockey.

That was a total side note.

Yep.

But it's all attached to how financially healthy the league is right now. Revenues are through the roof, so the cap is going to keep going up. You and I were on opposite sides of the lockout argument, but I think what will happen over the next few years show how ridiculous it was locking out the players over the financial well being of 3-4 teams.

It's going above 70 next year guaranteed, and will hit 80 in 3 years. I think that's a conservative estimate given the raise in the Saturday night HNIC contract alone will bump the upper cap about $2 million.

I said many times it made zero sense to waste a free buyout on Komisarek. Ridiculous.

It depends on what happens. If they can trade Liles, then there's no down side whatever. If they have to ordinary course buy out Liles, then it's a mixed bag, since they would gain 625 thousand of cap space vs. buying out Komisarek this year and next, which would give them more room to sign Kadri and Franson when the cap squeeze is the tightest ($64.3 million), but would cost them 2.375, 1.25, 1.25, and 1.25 million in cap space in years 3,4,5, and 6. Those last 4 years would be offset by a cap that's considerably higher than this years.

Actually works out to be 1.3 million this year, and 300K next.

Weird I know, but that's what it is. So eating the longer term cap hit is actually better for this year and next, and after this year the Colby & Darcy cap penalties are gone, so we would be done to just the Liles buyout penalty. At an 80 million dollar cap figure, that's extremely manageable.

Good catch, I didn't even try to look at a Komisarek buyout on CapGeek, since I thought it would automatically calculate a buy out on his new contract with Carolina, so I just did a rough 4.5 divided by 3.

You know, for all the complaining people have been doing about Nonis messing up on the compliance buy outs, it seems that he did buy out the correct two of the three candidates, if the goal is to free up the most cap space possible for this year.

Hopefully they can trade Liles though, then they could sign Kadri and Franson, without carrying any buy out cap hits forward.
