New York Yankees (2010-2013)

Re: New York Yankees

Word this morning is that talks between Cano's camp and the Mariners ended after Jay-Z pushed the asking price to ten years, $252 million.

Never say never, but sounds like Cano won't be signing in Seattle.

BryanHoch: Cashman says the Yankees are "on the one-yard line" with more than two players.

Guessing the completion of Ellsbury & Johnson's deals, and Kuroda, who Cashman said yesterday wanted to come back and is reportedly close to re-signing.

Re: New York Yankees

Staff news:

• Gary Tuck will likely take over as bullpen coach for the departed Mike Harkey.

• Trey Hillman is joining the Yankees as a pro scout.

• Eric Hinske was a pro scout for a month until he got a better gig with the Cubs, and was a key part of recruiting Brian McCann.

• Mike Quade is going to be the team's roving outfield and base-running instructor.

• Matthew Krause, formerly of the Reds, takes over for Dana Cavalea as the team's strength and conditioning coach.

Re: New York Yankees

The Yankees and Hiroki Kuroda have reportedly agreed to a one-year, $16 million deal plus incentives.

Joel Sherman says the deal was finalized last night. (LINK)

Re: New York Yankees

And he's gone. Cano agrees to a ten-year, $240 million deal with the Mariners.

Stupid Yankees. Stupid Cano.

Cano gets his years/money, but this is a lose-lose situation all around — the Yankees lose their best player and Cano goes to a bad team.

The Yankees have officially announced the signing of INF Kelly Johnson to a one-year, $3 million deal.

The 31-year-old hit .235/.305/.410 (101 wRC+) with 16 HR and 52 RBI in 407 plate appearances with the Rays in 2013.

Good deal... not your ideal starter, but definitely a solid bench piece with decent power numbers.

Re: New York Yankees

The Yankees have reportedly agreed to terms with Carlos Beltran on a three-year, $45 million deal.

The 36-year-old hit .296/.339/.491 (132 wRC+) with 24 HR and 84 RBI in 600 plate appearances for the Cardinals in 2013.

Re: New York Yankees

Even without Cano, the Yankees lineup should be deeper this season than last.

Current 1-6:
1. Ellsbury - CF
2. Jeter - SS
3. Beltran - RF
4. Soriano - DH
5. McCann - C
6. Teixeira - 1B

Not perfect, but definitely deeper. And not done.

The Yankees have officially announced the re-signing of RHP Hiroki Kuroda to a one-year, $16 million deal.

The 38-year-old went 11-13 with a 3.31 ERA (3.56 FIP) in 201.1 innings for the Yankees in 2013.

Glad he's back despite falling apart at the end of last season.
I'd like to see the team use him in more of a "Andy Pettitte" role this coming year, maybe skipping a few starts here or there and not relying on him quite as much.

The Yankees have officially announced the signing of OF Jacoby Ellsbury to a seven-year, $153 million deal.

The deal includes a $21 million club option with a $5 million buyout.

The 30-year-old hit .298/.355/.426 (113 wRC+) with 9 HR, 53 RBI and 52 stolen bases in 636 plate appearances with the Red Sox in 2013.

Not the greatest signing but as long as he avoids anymore freak injuries, he will be an upgrade at the top of the order.

Re: New York Yankees

Notes on outfielders:

• The Yankees have received significant interest in Gardner and are willing to trade him. The team doesn't plan to trade Gardner but will listen.

• The team has been shopping Ichiro Suzuki, who believes he is still an everyday player.

Re: New York Yankees

The baseball world has started arriving in Lake Buena Vista, Florida for the Winter Meetings.

Last year, the Yankees were under financial restrictions and didn't do anything but they're expected to continue being busy.

The team's biggest needs heading into this week are the rotation and the infield.

Re: New York Yankees

Winter Meetings - Monday:

• The Yankees strategy appears to be to see what's available trade-wise before going back to free agency.

• The Yankees have checked in on Cubs' starting pitcher Jeff Samardzija.

• The likely return for Brett Gardner in a trade would a number 4 starter. A number 3 would be a "great get," says a rival executive.

• The Yankees are involved in the lefty relief market and have checked in with Boone Logan.

Re: New York Yankees

Winter Meetings - Tuesday:

• The Yankees are "very much interested" in Michael Young and have checked in on Juan Uribe, Eric Chavez, Matt Garza & Ubaldo Jimenez.

• The Yankees have interest in utility-man Danny Espinosa but the Nationals are balking at moving him right now.

• The Yankees have interest in re-signing Mark Reynolds.

• Brian Cashman confirmed teams have inquired about Gary Sanchez, J.R. Murphy and Ivan Nova in addition to Brett Gardner and others.

• The Yankees are one of three teams to inquire about Dustin Ackley.

• The Yankees have been discussing Joaquin Benoit internally.

• The asking price for Omar Infante appears to be $8 million per season.

Re: New York Yankees

Interesting note here:

BNightengale:
• The Yankees would like to grab Indians' Masterson in a three-team trade involving Gardner if they can pull it off.
• There needs to be third team involved for Yankees to land Masterson since Indians don't need Gardner.

The 28-year-old went 14-10 with a 3.45 ERA (3.35 FIP) in 193.0 innings with the Indians in 2013.

Re: New York Yankees

The Yankees acquired RHP Kyle Haynes from the Pirates as the player to be named later in the Chris Stewart trade.

The 22-year-old went 1-5 (and seven saves) with a 2.38 ERA (2.68 FIP) in 83.1 innings with the Pirates' Single-A affiliate in 2013.

Eight of Haynes' 41 appearances were starts but the Yankees see him as a reliever.

JonHeymanCBS: Yankees turned down a Brandon Phillips for Brett Gardner offer.

The Yankees were not attracted to Phillips because he has four years at $50 million left on his contract, has had declining offense and has had some public skirmishes with Reds ownership. Also, anticipating that Robinson Cano might leave, Phillips and his reps put the Yankees on what is believed to be a 12-team no-trade list. It was possibly intimated to the Yankees that for Phillips to even consider a deal, he would have to have his contract extended. If the talks weren’t dead before that, they were at that point. Re: New York Yankees

Winter Meetings - Wednesday:

• The Yankees have apparently discussed a Brett Gardner for Austin Jackson swap with the Tigers.

• The Yankees are one of eight teams with interest in Johan Santana.

• The Yankees have interest in Didi Gregorius, who they'd use at second base next season.

• The Yankees have no interest in giving Omar Infante a four-year deal.

• Cashman expects the Yankees to lose players in Thursday's Rule 5 Draft.
