OT: American Politics

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

It's a good question though...why did only one officer fire all 9 shots?

My guess is that he was the only one with a good shot. Street car doors are pretty narrow and the stairs are pretty steep.

I just love everyone is a fricking expert in matters such as these.

Like most of the law enforcement experts being interviewed saying that this appears to be a case of incompetent cop?

You always have to question someone's motivation to go to the media. There was an excellent interview on metro morning this morning with a use of force instructor, what he basically said is that the video only gives you on perspective from 100 feet away and that it cuts out many different elements. At the end of the day we have basically nothing. And people run with it thinking they're experts now.

I've only seen some reasonable questions asked here, not a single person has claimed expertise.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

Obligatory "He was turning his life around" story in the Red Star today.

Hilarious. The guy was, by all accounts, a young wannabe gangbanger. Carried a knife everywhere he went.

But he was a "sweet, respectful boy". My ass.

Like trayvon was a "sweet boy"? I'm sure we'll see a parade of pictures of this guy as a wide-eyed 11-year old in the coming days.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

Comparing an unarmed kid who was murdered by an armed, bigoted vigilante who stalked him and killed him to a kid wielding a knife against streetcar passengers and the police is asinine.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

No, I'm comparing the media reaction to both cases. I think corky nailed it when he pointed out how quickly the "good sweet kid killed mercilessly by brutish white (maybe there were 'white Hispanic' cops in the mix too?) police" narrative was trotted out.

My reaction to this is also similar to the Martin case. I look at the "facts" as they are being presented (especially that video), and the case troubles me. My untrained and uninformed eye doesn't immediately see why 9 shots were needed to put this kid down. But my first instinct is to give the police the benefit of the doubt, and if a subsequent investigation shows improper conduct, I think heads have to roll. But I'm not going to immediately buy this "racist pig cops butcher poor innocent kids for sport" narrative that will likely be rolled out.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

Not one story I've read or watched has mentioned the colour of the officer.

Bingo.

Hell, I went to school (he was on my floor in first year) with one of the Toronto Star reporters covering the case, and he hasn't mentioned anything about race once.

I guess one can defined his gang bangers by carrying a knife. My father carries a pocket knife with him all the time. He's 96.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

He's Arab/Muslim, no? Did I hear that reported?

How soon do you think it's going to be before the race/minority warriors start spinning their $hit?

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

Who else was he going to hurt there was no one on the streetcar and the cops were all at least 10 feet back.

Twenty feet back. Their guns were drawn and aimed. There is no chance in hell that the kid could move more then a few feet before they killed him.
