OT: American Politics

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

Can you tell the difference when someone is holding a knife and you don't have the luxury of sitting behind a computer watching the video over and over again?

I can only comment on what I see...I'm not going to be a cop apologist when the very clear video shows what I would consider a pretty drastic use of force that could have easily been avoided.

It's not being an apologist. it's understanding that the real world differs from people's expectations. it also comes from having experienced similar situations.

The individual who was in the closet contact with him (the guy with bike) on the bus already said that he was posing no real danger to anyone on the bus.

Again - the Chief and Toronto Police Board have already recognized that something went wrong. Your opinion means very little here.

You've had a gun on someone?

I've been in violent situations before and can surely understand the stress this cop was under so I do feel for him...it wasn't an easy decision but it is also perfectly reasonable to assume he panicked and ****ed it up.

He had a knife. Full stop. It's a weapon and some guy on the streetcar who says he posed no threat is a moron (I assume he also got off the street car because it was his stop, not because he was scared?)

Bill Blair has said the public deserves answers, that's it. Anything else is people is placing their own meanings on his words. He is actually quite restricted in what he can and cannot say due to the SIU invoking their mandate.

I've been in situations where an individual has had a break from reality and had a knife in a confined space.

He's a first responder - his opinion has more weight than anyone elses.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

I'm shocked people aren't accepting this as a police **** up.

Angry kids with pocket knives are easily de-escalated and subdued by cops without guns, practically on a nightly basis in Glasgow, in situations far less controlled than this. In the last 5 years in Scotland I can't recall a cop being seriously injured under those circumstances.

Yeah, but I wouldn't screw with Scottish police under the best of circumstances. If you can handle Rangers-Celtic sectarian-fuelled riots you can handle just about anything. :lol

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

I don't know about you, but I am thrilled that the public is outraged and demanding answers...much better than the general shrugging you see down south when cops gun down people...

Huh? How so?

If he is a cop trained under current practices, then I would agree. I will go with the majority of the veterans who are speaking out about it...both in person and on the radio.

I'm sure voyager's experiences would have him booted from any jury that was looking into this...:)
