Re: OT: Canadian Politics

The riding was never solid blue. Anyone there will tell you they loved the incumbent because they were a great MPP that worked hard and looked out for the constituency's interests. It had nothing to do with partisanship support. It was up for grabs and the Tories ran a really shitty candidate.

22 years (which goes back to the days of NDP gov't, and through the past years of liberal gov't) and the fact it is also a pretty solid federal conservative riding makes it pretty "blue".

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

Again, you're being intentionally obtuse. The people loved that particular MPP, not the party.

So the fact that once that MPP retired and a shitty candidate was offered, it should not have been particularly surprising that the populace only gave the Tories a shade over thirty percent of support.

You know what's funny? You watch these gong shows that they call conventions and think that they can't possibly mean anything.....but they actually do work.

The Reps got a nice bump after their convention, from trailing by 1-2pts to a dead heat, and already the dead heat has turned into a near 1pt lead for the dems in the poll the day after their convention.

Despite what the Republicans tell you, you don't need to tear down every possible safety net or regulation, and make sure rich people don't pay taxes for a nation to succeed. There are other alternatives. Alternatives that actually work.

That's it in a nutshell.
And when it's those same rich people telling you this while your world is getting tighter, I'd have to rethink that idea.

The Labor Department reported Friday that the economy created a tepid 96,000 jobs in August, well below the 125,000 expected by economists and a far stretch from the plus-250,0000 needed to show robust growth. The unemployment rate slid to 8.1 percent from 8.3 percent as more Americans gave up looking for work.

The data was further evidence of a Goldilocks economy -- not too hot, not too cold, but not just right either -- that could prompt the Federal Reserve to take new steps to boost growth.

"This weak employment report, in jobs, wages, hours worked and participation is probably the last piece the Fed needs before launching another round of quantitative easing next week. QE will boost equities, damage the dollar and do little for the economy, but what else can an activist Fed do? " said Joseph Trevisani, chief market strategist at Wordwide Markets.

The report's weak tenor was also underscored by revisions to June and July data to show 41,000 fewer jobs created than previously reported. The labor force participation rate, or the percentage of Americans who either have a job or are looking for one, fell to 63.5 percent -- the lowest since September 1981.

The elevated jobless rate has put the economy front and center in the race for the White House, endangering Obama's hopes for a second term. The weak jobs report could rob Obama of any momentum he hoped to gain with his speech at the Democratic National Convention.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

i can tell you that teachers devoted MASSIVE resources to this NDP win in K/W. this is a huge victory for teachers. in a solid blue riding teachers flexed their muscles and helped turn it orange. i think it needs to serve as a warning to mcweasel that when you play with the hive, you get bees.

so you supoort the NDP now yet you have the nerve to call JCY a socialist?
