OT: Coronavirus Resources - and other things to not worry about

This should be that wake up call, whether this new one can out compete Delta or not. A heavily mutated varient comes out of a developing nation that has ~25% vaccination uptake due to inability to secure doses. It was one thing for wealthy countries to sit comfortably behind their borders with their plentiful vaccine supply and be comfy in the belief that anything "over there" can't hurt us anymore....this changes that math immediately.

The first world really needs to look into a massive investment in vaccine production. I've seen some projections that the expectation is that the pharma industry will be able to ramp up to produce 1 billion doses a month by the end of the year...and that's kind of fucking incredible.

But it's not close to enough. 7.8 billion people, and it's a 3 dose vaccine....that's bad math for us. There is always going to be massive pockets of poor, densely populated humanity that is underserved by those numbers and providing perfect conditions to spit out a new varient that sends the nerds back to the lab in a race to keep the world from shutting down again. A 6 month turn around time is ridiculous, again fucking incredible...but it's again not enough.

We need to nut up as a species, spend a pile of money on vaccine production capacity that we know in advance, if we do the shit right, we're only going to need once. We need to be able to crank out 20-25 billion doses in 4-6 months, not 2 years. This shit is just going to keep circulating and mutating, circulating and mutating otherwise. Squeeze it out of the rich countries, mutate in the poor countries...over and over again.

News flash

Rich people/ countries don’t give a shit about the poor or third world countries

That’s why vaccination rates are so low or non existent in some places

We'll find out a lot soon. How will this variant compete in a country where delta is prevalent at high numbers? I've seen early estimates from some nerds that it is growing everywhere from 2.5-6x faster than delta in South Africa (in multiple regions so less likely to be a fluke). Of course much of that could be because delta already infected much of the SA population so this variant has an immunity evading advantage, as opposed to a sheer transmissibility advantage. Hoping that's the main factor because if this thing is 2.5x or more infectious.. well that just seems really unlikely because that's measles+.

This is fun in a dark way. Like a riveting thriller movie. Wonder what happens next. We know the nerds will figure some shit out eventually so I'm curious to see how this ends!

So my wedding reception on Dec 18th is fucked right? Cases will begin to pop up here this week and on the 13th everything will get scaled down

Will be tight for sure. My brother's is in March after rescheduling it 3 times. I'm assuming that's not gonna happen. Yours may have a shot.

Anecdata is all over the place but hopefully that's more true than this

They have a very young population so we'll see how other countries deal with it. Likely won't know for several weeks.

Apparently those young ones were all unvaccinated.
Yeah 65% unvaxxed and 35% partially or fully vaxxed (they say mostly half vaxxed for the last 35%). Problem is I think they only have 25% of the populaiton fully vaxxed so idk how good that is or if we can read into it.

Thing is we've seen this story before with each variant re: younger people getting hospitalized. Shitty if this is another uptick in severity.

I do think it's likely that 3 doses provides good protection since 3 doses provided slightly better protection on beta vs original covid on 2 doses.. and beta was the most immune evasive to date, albeit likely not as much as this one.

But it probably means immunity will wane just as quick as it did with delta so the next boost should be specific to this variant (until another comes up of course).

Or all these ppl will get long covid and it’ll be like in Mario world for snes where the bastard comes back like a battering ram 8 times before you beat the fucker down.
