OT: Movies/TV Shows

as for tom cruise - it is the fact he is like pope's right hand man that is the issue

Oh hes a loon who is way too hooked up in something that is a cross between a cult and a soulless corporation, I just dont differentiate much between goofy beliefs. To a non believer, they're all pretty ****ing crazy sounding. I could rank them and all, but it's all in the same crazy ass neighborhood.

agreed
chris pratt is also a loon in my mind

I think I have to go with LoF on the nutso debate.

while technically neither belief is any crazier than any other all things being equal, i have to say that believing in a religion that the entire culture has been seeped in from birth is probably less crazy than deciding to guide your life around some dude's alien story.

that being said, the root of scientology is probably solid self help stuff - talking about your demons, getting control of them, and working to get rid of them. I would guess that many people have indeed changed their lives for the better in many ways when they start scientology. It's only much later on at like level 7 or something do you actually learn about the aliens, and by that time you're too far gone, and they have far too much blackmail on you, for you to back out easily.

Yeah, I dont dismiss the cultural aspect of believing. As stand alone explanations for why we're here though, they're pretty equally nuts.

I don't generally care what actors have going on in their personal lives, but I do have to admit I make a special exception for Cruise.

Him being the enthusiastic front-man for a whacko cult that's explicitly a money-making scam, and is into all kinds of scary and shady shit (like running child forced labour camps and internment camps) is a little too much for me to get past, and is the reason I haven't watched any of Cruise's new movies for the past 10-15 years.

I think there's a definite distinction between that and someone who's your run-of-the-mill devout follower of some Jeebus Church.

There was a really sad Travolta story recently about Scientology where he was trying to raise his son from the dead in the ambulance as he was dying. It's a nutty cult.

buddhism/jainism pretty damn good but the literal reincarnation stuff is a bit too much.

Its kooky but if we're ranking religions by the nuttiness of their doctrine and mythology, the Jains are contending for best of the bunch.
