OT: Soccer thread

Without the Italian players this team would have been out of the playoffs back in July... next year they need to address the goaltending and the defence...

So his chances are slim to begin with.

Can’t say I blame them for leaving the Serie A fishbowl if there isn’t a gig at Qatar up for grabs.

So Canada finally plays a non-concacaf opponent today.....against Qatar. Qatar's not great but they're top-50 by ELO rankings and they've been training hard for this world cup so this wasn't a soft opponent at all.

And Canada looked excellent - controlled, confident, and decisive. No nerves. They controlled the whole game and probably deserved better than the 2-0 scoreline. though that's a good scoreline regardless.

Very nice all around.

They went with this lineup, which has to be pretty much what they're thinking of using to start the world cup:

Larin ----- David

Davies

Adekugbe ----- Eustaquio ----- Piette ----- Hoillett

Miller ----- Vitoria ---- Johnston

I assume Piette is just a placeholder for the injured Hutchinson.

And while it's not my favorite i'm not surprised they're going with a full 3 defensive stalwarts on the backline instead of using Adekugbe and Laryea on other side of a back 4. It's a more defensive setup but the team still has plenty of offense.

So Adekugbe moves up into a true winger role, which moves Davies up into the middle of the attack, which makes sense.

I'm a little surprised Laryea didnt get the start, even though Hoillet is good. I would guess that that right wing spot is still Buchanan's when he's healthy anyways....but the price of this formation is losing one of Laryea/Hoillet/Buchanan from the attack.
