Kuklas corner came out with his predictions on the metropolitan division and as everyone politically correct has said, canes in 8th and this was before skinners concussion. He also said the canes are a candidate to move.
 
And ESPN power rankings have the canes 30th. Again before skinners concussion was know.

Well Mr. Francis, what are you going to do?
Do we still like our team?

This place really cracks me up. Almost everybody seems to think that the Canes can make all kinds of trades and they seem to forget the other team has to agree to the trade. How about Dwyer for Crosby?? (Maybe throw in a late round pick too) And even in the case of a FA, the player has to agree to sign.

It's not like the GM waves a wand and all of a sudden the team is improved.

Also do you expect the GM or coach to say before the season "Well, we suck this year. We might get 50 points. And don't forget to buy season tickets!"

Other gms have been making trades. Plus, there are many players in the waiver wire, some of which are probably better than some we have.

BK, I totally agree with everything you wrote, but we know all too well that's just not how this org rolls.
 
Players on waivers some of which are "probably better"? That's pretty vague. OK, who are these players?

Also who should be traded from the Canes and to which team? And what return should the Canes get?
 
The Canes need to be on the lookout of ways to add youth and skill to the club. Leddy is an example of an improvement this team could have made relatively cheap. Furthermore it would have kept the Islanders from getting him to increase the gap with the Canes. This was a missed opportunity to improve the team both now and in the future. He would have ended up no worse than our 5th defenseman and likely in our top 4 by mid-year due to his speed alone.

How do you know what the Canes offered for Leddy? Maybe they were outbid by Islanders? We don't know what happened . (or maybe they chose not to make an offer)

As I said above, the Canes cannot simply snap their fingers and get any player they want. They have to compete against every other team to get talent. And since everyone seems to agree the Canes depth is not good, that means they don't have much to trade away.

I hope the Canes sit him for awhile as he is too valuable to try and rush back to the roster. Gotta feel for the kid that he keeps getting knocked in head this much. Averaging a concussion a year for the last 3 now is a troubling sign. Would be great to see him stay healthy remainder of year once coming back both for the Canes and his own sanity. Get well Jeff.
 
The canes are really in deep, very deep dodo. If they have another season like last season or the one before, what happens to the fan base? And all indications show they are in this road. They've swapped gms and the coach. The players are basically the same with the exception of the two injured. They did nothing to improve.
The canes have something very very valuable. A very high first round pick and a very high second round pick. Are they willing to swap them for a player that could be a difference maker?
If Francis is bidding on players he ain't going very high.
So, which do you want to lose Mr.gM? Players and draft picks or whats left of your fan base?

There is NO realistic trade he can make right now that make THIS team a Stanley cup contender. The fans are pretty much already gone due to the previous 5 years so Francis better hold onto picks and start to rebuild this team around youth once the compete fantasy of this year is finally done. I think there is a slim chance Eric Staal is on this roster come next year's camp. Probably the same is true of Semin and Jordan as well, but I think you have to keep at least one (Jordan) to help lead the youth assuming that is a role they would want.
 
If you guessed Patrick Brown would be recalled to cover Skinner's lineup spot...you win.

Brown has yet to play a pro game that counts. Looks like his first one will be in the NHL.
 
Brown's father played in the NHL for 15 years. And his grandfather was Wellington Mara who owned the FB Giants. Which makes him a cousin of actress Rooney Mara.

That's what they should be doing...but we all know that's not how this org operates. If Francis was smart, he starts to plan his attack now for the March trade deadline and set the table for the trading of Eric Staal, Cam Ward and Alex Semin. All three of those players should be packaged up for youth and picks to build for the future...this team is going nowhere fast and you have to start stockpiling youth and prospects to ever get back to being respectable.

I still feel like the Canes have a great chance of securing one of those top 2-3 draft picks that can change the franchise long term. These are once in a generation talents by all accounts.
 
Even if Francis decides NOT to try to move, or simply can't move anyone with a big contract, he at least HAS to go find some muscle. This team has absolutely ZERO team toughness, and if he's going to try to build around guys like Skinner, Lindholm, Murphy, etc, they need to be protected. I'm not a fan of goonism, but the Canes get eaten alive out there night after night by cheap shots, etc. The league isn't going to police it, so the Canes have to! They need at LEAST two big guys who can fight when needed, or guys who can at least go knock someone's teeth through the glass, AND can skate a regular shift. There's absolutely NO ONE on this roster right now who can or is willing to hit hard enough to intimidate even the smallest NHL players.

I'd love to see one be a d-man, and one be a forward. Bryan Allen would even be an improvement over the likes of Gleason and Harrison.
 
Isn't Penner still an unsigned UFA? Played for $2m last year. Couldn't be any worse than Boychuk, LaRose, Brown, etc.

Exactly. Once Niskanen dropped Skinner, someone should have done the same to Backstrom over and over and over again. But this bunch couldn't even finish their checks.
