At this point I'm not quite sure what the opening night lines will be. Maybe this?:

Tlusty-E. Staal-Semin
Skinner-Rask-Lindholm
Gerbe-Nash-Terry?
Malone-McClement-Dwyer

OMG!!!

I thought there was a league rule about icing a competitive team.

Remember when the "Big Club" in Baseball would come in and play their AAA affiliate in an exibition game? The Canes ought to do this on Wednesday. Bring the Cherkers in for a tilt. I bet it would be a close game.

As part of the "we'll handle it through committee" approach to dealing with Jordan being out, Peters has pivoted from his original plan of having a two-way defensively responsible (Brind'Amour) second line and then having a secondary-scoring offense-first third line, to a third line checking model.

So either McClement or Nash centers that third line, and perhaps it's McClement due to his defensive zone faceoff prowess, with two defensively responsible wingers. I would expect that to be perhaps Gerbe on the left and Dwyer on the right.

Lord knows what the fourth line now does, but if it is still energy-line responsibility, then Malone and Terry would be adequate wingers for that function along with whatever center is not working the third line. However, we're getting back to junk-drawer status for that fourth line.

I think dalpe was playing for the slugs when they went against the canes the other night.

Ok, training camp is over, past, history, doesn't count.

They start a brand new season one of these days and are playing some team that has improved drastically.
This so where it begins. All history is forgotten. They have a chance tor show the hockey illiterate, nascar race, beer swilling fans they mean business and they'll take it to the bank.
So, with all that in our minds, puny as they maybe, the canes hace a chance to make an impression, a long lasting one. If they win and play well, they can point to themselves and say we did it. We are number 1. If they lay an egg they can resort to the very well practiced excuses. Peters and the players don't even need to attend the post game conference, they can use a recording of an older post game conference. We didn't compete, they had the jump, our best need to be our best and what not.

I think it's important to at least play well in the home opener under a new coach even if you lose. You raise a good point about first impressions. If they come out and play like they did in DC the other day ... well, let's just say that's not the lingering impression you want to be leaving. Winning the game would be good, but I think this market is mature enough to know that sometimes you don't get the result you deserve.

Is there any chance that good coaching can do enough with the pieces the Canes have to get to the playoffs. On paper, talent here is pretty thin.

Skinner officially concussed. Well, I now have absolutely zero faith in this team for the season. Stick a fork in'em!

Canes announce Skinner officially diagnosed with a concussion. So....only 12 forwards on the roster, who is the first callup? Boychuk actually needs to be assigned to Charlotte or he would have to clear waivers again (plus I get the impression the Canes don't particularly care for him filling that spot).

So now what? If SKinner can't play Friday someone needs to be recalled. Place your bets on...

Brock McGinn (NHL game before an AHL game?)
Patrick Brown (NHL game before AHL game?)
Phil Di Guiesppi?
Ben Holmstrom?
Brendan Woods?
Brody Sutter?

Player XYZ to be claimed from waivers?

Whose it going to be?

Season over before it even begins. As a Mets fan this is very familiar to me.Ronnie needs to make some kind of trade to get a few more pieces in here.Losing 2 out of our top 6 in pre season games really stings.

Until RF and PK decide to pull the trigger on a trade or waiver, I'd like to see a rotation of McGuinn, DiG and Brown.

If you're going to rotate youth through the roster, go full bore! This team simply isn't going to compete for a playoff position. Might as well start building. I say no to trades unless they involve getting rid of the vets with bad contracts. And those deals likely can't or won't happen till the deadline. If you grab a waiver wire guy, it needs to be for toughness, and nothing else. The younger guys need ot feel safe out there, and not like they have targets printed on their jerseys every night, which has become status quo.
