2019 Carolina Hurricanes Off Season Thread

Married women and women with children describes a HUGE percentage of the female customers at any hockey game ... so ... not exactly a minor concern. Add in students and others who have to lug around more stuff than will fit in what amounts to a clutch. The largest non-plastic bag allowed is 4.5 inches by 6.5 inches ... so, basically the size of a modern smart phone and maybe a slim wallet. Yeah, thanks. Anybody who needs to carry around meds or whatever else (or a freaking book) is out of luck unless they know ahead of time that they need a specific clear plastic bag. Add in that MANY people feel like having whatever the heck they're carrying in their purse/bag in clear plastic so the world can see it is embarrassing or otherwise an invasion.

Look ... once everybody's had a chance to figure this all out, it's probably going to fine over time. But let's not act like it's no big deal just because we're a bunch of dudes who can fit whatever we need in the pockets of our jeans.

Nothing else going on, what else are we going to talk about until someone signs their RFAs and JWill make a decision and the new Away jerseys are unveiled (next Tuesday it appears)?

It is kind of like the liquid restrictions they place on airline travelers. Once you get the rules, it isn't that hard to play within them. In my travels to the other side of the globe I have learned to carry soap, shampoo, deodorant, tooth paste & brush, floss, mouthwash, a razor, and Q-Tips all in a clear bag the size of a paperback book that i keep in my camera bag. Never had a problem with it. Before I started carrying the clear bag, some of my liquids got confiscated, even though they are still in the same size container today. Pare it down to necessity and you'll get through the line faster.

Note Aho's reference to a "new cap" in this Sportnet piece...

https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/sebastian-aho-opens-canadiens-offer-sheet-process/

Is he referring to...

1. Willams not returning?
2. Williams returning but not wearing the C?
3. The new $81.5 million salary cap?

My money is on #2.

That’s an interesting take Kurtzie with #2. I never really gave much thought to that option but it would be a very JWilly thing to do. Pass the torch to someone younger like Aho or Slavin but stay on for one more year as a mentor and a little less pressure and stress on the old man to enjoy his final season in the league.

Don't think it's No. 3 so you'd have to pick between 1 and 2. Honestly, I'm thinking that Williams wants to retire but hasn't been able to pull the trigger yet. From the way the roster is set up, it's pretty clear that the front office is planning on life without Williams and personally I'm going to assume he's walking away until events prove otherwise. I'm guessing the guys are as well, so they're counting on a new year and a new leadership group. And then if Willie comes back after all, it's not like anybody is going to shut the guy out. They all love the guy.

One thing to note on Aho's situation ... as the summer grinds on and the giant flotilla of unsigned RFAs sits menacingly off the coast, Aho looks like a freaking genius for leveraging that offer sheet into a done deal so he can just stick to preparing for the new season in the normal way. He's always said that was his first priority and he's the ONLY prominent RFA to have a deal done ... and we're in mid-August.

Hmm ... don't know where the 5 year thing came from then. Not that it matters much ... not in the short term anyway.

There is your Trevor Carrick PP replacement for the Checkers.
Priskie is better regarded than Carrick ever was, although in the short run yeah ... right side Power Play guy for the Checkers. But he's supposedly close to NHL quality.

You have Bean on the left and Priskie on the right. I'm sure the Canes would LOVE Priskie to prove himself fully capable quickly so we don't have to pay both Faulk and Hamilton.

It will be interesting to see just how quickly he can get up to speed as the clock continues to tick down on a Justin Faulk contract decision. The Canes could benefit greatly if Priskie is capable of developing on the Slavin/Pesce "just a cup of coffee in the AHL" timeline.
