Eric Staal Thread

He will be THE big piece available

Well, there's that Stamkos guy that's still a pending UFA. I heard he's decent.

The only way I can see E12 not waiving his NTC is if he thinks he'll be exposed playing for another team and that will drive down his market value for the summer. Other than that, let's be real here. When you sign a guy to a long-term deal, I can understand that he'd want to be sure he's not going to be traded mid-contract and have to play in a city for several years that he doesn't like. But we're talking about 2-4 months here, not years. I don't think this is really what the parties had in mind when they agreed to the NTC.

As far as whether retaining him would be a good idea if we're close to making the playoffs, I can see RF considering that, but he's always talked about the long term. Why do you need to have guys get some playoff experience now when the plan is to be a consistent playoff team in the near future? They'll get the experience sooner or later. Yes, the playoffs bring money, but unless there's a need for an infusion of cash quickly, there's no need to get a few million now because the plan is to get that and more later.

My guess is that its much better than 50/50 that E12 gets moved next month. Of course, there's lots of information that we don't have so its pretty hard to handicap.

If you believe he won't resign in Tampa. That situation is about the opposite of Staal. Yzerman WILL get lambasted if he doesn't re-sign Stamkos. I am not convinced that he will resort to trading him nor that Stamkos will leave necessarily.

I don't know what Stamkos will do. But I'm a little surprised that he hasn't been signed already if he's going to sign. Maybe its as simple as he wants to play somewhere else, live in a different city, whatever. If the guy wants to go play for his favorite team, who is willing to pay for his services, how can you negotiate against that? If that's the case, then it'll be hard to lambaste Stevie Y over it (but people will anyway). But he's the biggest fish out there until he's actually signed.

A big difference between that situation and the Canes, though, is that Tampa has a legit chance to make the conference finals. And if you make it that far, who knows what can happen. On the other hand, Stevie Y would get a king's ransom for Stamkos.

Canes traded first and 2nd round picks and got back Doug Weight and Mark Recchi and proceeded to win the Cup. These trades don't always fail....

Nope ... in fact they quite often work which is why you see them virtually every year.

The Weight trade was made on January 30, well before the trade deadline. The Hurricanes got Doug Weight and the rights to Erkki Rajamaki (who was playing in Finland) for Jesse Boulerice, Mike Zigomanis, the rights to Magnus Kahnberg (who was playing in Sweden), a 2006 1st rounder (Matt Corrente), a 2006 4th rounder (Reto Berra) and a 2007 4th rounder (Cade Fairchild).

The Recchi trade was made at the deadline. We got Recchi for Niklas Nordgren (he made the opening night roster but only played 43 games), Krystofer Kolanos (how had 21 points in 19 games in Lowell) and a 2007 second rounder (Kevin Marshall).

Regardless of how any of this plays out with Eric and Cam and Versteeg and Liles and Gerbe and the playoffs, this is going to be one of the most exciting months this franchise has had in a very long time. Throw in a 2 night celebration of the Cup win, there will be plenty of buzz surround this franchise over the next 4 weeks.

All of that wondering about how this is all going to end up that we did in the offseason, the pre-season and all throughout this season? Just 31 more days and we will know for sure. By the time we see the Canes at PNC arena again, there will just be 17 days until the trade deadline....

Rumor has it that the Hawks could be looking for a top 6 forward and a 2nd pairing defenseman. They are contenders and defending champions.
That being said. Cap space issues. That being said, they have shown the ability and willingness in the past to both be patient with an eye on their future and other times acquire a player at deadline. Rumor has it that maybe, a player like Teuvo Teravainen could be available, along with defenseman Van Rymsdiek.
Hmmm..

E. Staal and Versteeg to Chicago
for depth, experience, agitation, play making, penalty kill etc... etc...
we eat the rest of both players salaries. that is a lot but hey, they were going to get payed anyway right? what is the big dif?

for

T. Teravainen, Andrew Shaw
In the first, we get a young (20), decent size shifty speedy Teravainen. Definite PP asset. Can play both center and wing.
In the second, we get also a younger versatile center, agitator, hard worker... right hand, who can and has been playing wing in Chicago, and like E. Staal with Versteeg, happens to play with Teravainen and the two have developed chemistry.

We'd be taking Shaw's 2.5 salary back and Teravainen's 1 mil. Shaw is going into RFA and Teravainen has 1 year left.

This all assumes that a otherwise noteably patient Bowman decides to invest in now... and go for more guarantee in defending the cup because there really is not much going back for Chicago to hold on to.

As for Staal, this I can see him maybe being interested in moving for, a rental deal to a bonafide contender.

Anyway... imagine a third line of Aho, Teravainen and Shaw?

Wouldn't work. First, under the CBA a team can have only 3 reatined cap hit transactions at any time. We have 2 right now (Ruutu and Harrison). Also, a team can only retain 50% of a player's cap hit. If we ate 50% of Staal's hit, Chi would still be about 1.5M over (if my math is right). It would work if we ate half of Staal's cap hit and took back Bickel. That actually would make it cap hit neutral just about. The other thing is, trading away 2 young guys for 2 expiring contracts that they can't possibly resign doesn't seem like their style. And it doesn't help them with a second pairing D man. In fact, it uses up assests they could have used to get a 2d pair D man. Maybe RF can hoodwink them into taking Staal and Liles. Why would they want Staal anyway? They already look pretty good at C in the top 6. Does he move to wing? He'd be an awful 3d line C.

Eric Staal is pretty much in control of his fate.

Has the NMC for the short-term decision. And it's all about money and term for the long-term decision.

I doubt Ron has closed the door on Future Eric at any price. He'd like to have the piece next season and beyond...at the right price and term.

There's a dollar figure and a certain number of guaranteed years that can put Eric on the path to be Canes-for-life with a series of two- and one-year contracts after that multi-year one until he's ready to hang 'em up and watch his number go up in the rafters.

Maximize the dollars or maximize the lifestyle. All up to him.

So the Canes play 13 games this month.. I figure they need to win roughly 8 of those. OR get at least 16 points of a possible 26 to stay in the hunt...

What a predicament though. At this point, 'talking about the playoffs' is still somewhat pre-mature, yet the team's fate and p-off chances are right in front of them. I am routing for them.

That being said, again, what happens on the 28th, at 6pm and the Canes are in or within one or two points of the p-offs?

But they only play 5 games in the first 2 weeks. By the time Valentine's Day rolls around, we should have a truer picture of the standings. They also have 4 point games against the Pens on 2/12 and Islanders on 2/13.

Canes are 6th in the Metropolitan Division with 54 points in 51 games played. The Devils have 55 in 50, Pens 55 in 48, Islanders 56 in 47.

Islanders play 7 games before Valentine's Day; the 7th is against the Canes on 2/13, so they'll make up 2 of the 4 games in hand.
Devils play 6 in that period, so they'll be level on games played with the Canes.
Pens play 6 in that period so they'll only make up 1 of the 3 games in hand but the 6th is against the Canes on 2/12.

He did say that he would waive his nmc (wouldn't get in the way of a deal). He's also mentioned many times that he has a family.

Yeah, that's not exactly what he said.

And even if warm to the concept, he would certainly use it to veto or pick a suitor.

It's a factor.

Are you sure he has gone on record as saying this? I certainly cant find that anywhere.

He's never come out and said that, although both Luke and Chip have indicated in various articles that he wouldn't get in the way of a deal. Everybody has pussy-footed around the issue thus far. Which means that we'll just have to wait and see.

Less than 4 weeks now until we know how it ends up.

As we discussed before the break (and as mentioned up in posts above), these next 10 days a lot of those 'games in hand' that other team have on us will play themselves out as the Canes only play 3 games over these next 10 days. There are a bunch of games that impact the Canes 'playoff chances' tonight (5 of them in fact involving 7 teams just ahead or behind the Canes).

I don't like the whole "wait and see" approach to the playoff standings. I don't think that is every going to provide a clear answer for Carolina. They aren't bad enough to go on an extended losing streak at this point in the season, and even if they continue to play well are likely still going to find themselves on the outside looking in due to the number of teams involved. The month of November pretty much blew it for this team this year.

The Canes ownership and GM need to make the decision about what they want to do regardless of the standings. Looking at the standings and clinging to hope is a good part of why this organization has struggled and NOT made the playoffs recently. Hopefully Ronnie makes the right moves without getting caught up in looking at the standings. Deep down he has to know the moves that are needed.
